La Montagne is French for "The Mountain". It is an area just northwest (about two hours by car) of the small city, Jacmel, on the south side of the island. Three villages, Le Croix, Terra Rouge, and Belleu are within the area.. Most of the local people farm, growing enough for their own family and perhaps a bit more to sell at the local market. Water is scarce, plumbing and electricity is non-existent. Children walk as far as 1-1/2 hours to attend one of the schools, if their families can afford the $25 year tuition. This village is about 4 miles from the coast at an elevation of approx. 3000 feet. |
